Hematite is an iron oxide mineral, one of the densest and most metallic-looking natural stones. Its high iron content makes it noticeably heavy for its size. Each piece is natural and unique in size, color and pattern.

Look and feel

Hematite has a metallic gray to silver, mirror-like surface and feels cool and weighty in the hand. With a hardness of 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale it is fairly durable, yet it can break on impact, so handle it with care. Keep it dry: hematite can rust when exposed to moisture.

In tradition

The name comes from the Greek haima, blood, after the deep red streak the mineral leaves when rubbed, and it is sometimes called the blood stone. The ancient Egyptians set it in amulets associated with courage, and Roman soldiers carried it as a symbol of strength and endurance. In crystal lore it is traditionally associated with the root chakra (Muladhara), with grounding and a sense of stability, and with focus and confidence. In astrological tradition it is linked with Aries, Scorpio and Capricorn.
