Tourmaline is a family of complex boron silicate minerals containing elements such as iron, magnesium and lithium. Small differences in composition produce its many colors, including black, green and blue. Black tourmaline, the most common variety, is rich in iron. Each piece is natural and unique in shape, color and size.

Look and feel

Tourmaline has a striated, often glossy surface and a satisfying weight in the hand. With a hardness of 7–7.5 on the Mohs scale it is one of the more durable stones — well suited to a pocket, a desk or a meditation corner.

In tradition

Tourmaline has been valued across cultures for centuries. In ancient India it was carried as a talisman, and an old Egyptian legend says it passed through a rainbow on its way up from the earth, which is why it comes in so many colors. In crystal lore, black tourmaline is traditionally associated with the root chakra and with grounding and stability, green tourmaline with the heart chakra, and blue tourmaline with the throat and third eye chakras. In astrological tradition it is linked with Capricorn, Libra and Scorpio.
