Selenite Crystal — translucent natural gypsum
Selenite is a variety of the mineral gypsum, made of calcium sulfate dihydrate — calcium, sulfur, oxygen and hydrogen. Its delicate, fibrous structure catches light and gives it a soft, luminous glow. Each piece is natural and unique in size, shape and texture.
Look and feel
Selenite feels silky and light, and its glow changes with the light in the room. It is also one of the softest stones you can own: 2 on the Mohs scale, easily scratched, and it dissolves in water, so it needs gentle handling and a dry home.
In tradition
Its name comes from the Greek word for moon, after its moonlike shimmer, and in ancient Greece and Rome it was associated with moon goddesses. In crystal lore selenite is traditionally associated with the crown, heart and root chakras, with clarity and with peaceful reflection. In astrological tradition it is linked with Cancer, Taurus and Pisces. Many people keep a piece in a meditation corner or on a bedside table as a quiet, luminous accent.
