A Simple Smoke Cleansing Ritual for Your Home

For thousands of years, people have burned herbs and woods to mark a fresh start in a home. Whether you follow the tradition closely or simply enjoy the ritual, it is easy to do. Here is a calm version that takes about twenty minutes.

What you need

• A heat-safe holder, such as a seashell or a ceramic dish
• Matches or a lighter
• An open window

Step by step

1. Open up

Open a window or two. Fresh air keeps the smoke light.

2. Set an intention

Pause for a moment and decide what this ritual marks: a clean slate, a new season. A simple sentence is enough.

3. Light and guide

Light the tip of your sage bundle or a stick of palo santo, let it catch, then gently blow out the flame so it smolders. Walk slowly along walls, corners and doorways, holder underneath. In many smoke cleansing traditions, corners and thresholds get special attention.

4. Rest and repeat room by room

Rest the bundle in the holder between rooms. Work from the back of the home toward the open window.

5. Put it out

Press the tip into the shell, a dish or a little sand until it stops smoking. Never leave it burning unattended; keep it away from children, pets and anything flammable. If you have asthma or are sensitive to smoke, ask your doctor first.

When to do it

Moving into a new home, a new season, after guests, or any time you want a fresh start. Once a month is a pleasant rhythm.

Afterward: add a stone
