How to Use Botanical Blend Incense: A Step-by-Step Guide
For thousands of years, incense has held a place in many cultures, and it still plays a part in homes, work spaces and rituals today. Botanical blend incenses, made from dried herbs, flowers and resins, fill a room with natural scent and are a beloved part of many rituals. So how do you use them? Here is our step-by-step guide.
1. Choose Your Blend
The right blend depends on the moment and on the scents you like. Some people want a soft floral scent for a quiet evening, others a crisp herbal one for a study session, a resinous one for meditation, or a traditional herb such as Anatolian sage for a smoke cleansing ritual. Mamuxa’s range includes blends made for different traditions and tastes, so you can choose by scent and by occasion.
2. Prepare a Safe Spot
Before lighting anything, open a window in the room where you will burn the incense. Use a heat-proof surface, such as a ceramic dish or a holder, and keep anything flammable well away. Place the incense out of reach of children and pets.
3. Use Incense Charcoal and a Holder
Loose botanical blends are usually burned on incense charcoal in a heat-resistant holder. Fill the holder with a layer of sand or rock salt and set the charcoal on top; the layer spreads the heat and keeps the bowl from getting too hot. Some holders are designed to take the blend directly; follow the instructions that come with yours.
4. Light the Incense
Hold the charcoal with tongs and light its edge with a match or lighter. It will spark for a few seconds. Set it on the sand and wait until it glows and turns gray at the edges, then sprinkle a small pinch of the blend on top. Add more a little at a time as the first pinch burns away.
5. Let the Scent Move Through the Room
Let the smoke rise and drift through the space. In smoke cleansing traditions, people often carry the holder slowly through a room, paying special attention to doorways, windows and corners. If you move it, hold it by its base.
6. Focus Your Intentions
While the incense burns, focus on your intention, whether it is a quiet moment for yourself, a meditation session or a fresh start for your space. Setting an intention is a cherished part of the ritual.
7. Let It Burn Out
When you are finished, leave the holder on a heat-proof surface and let the charcoal burn out completely. It stays hot for a long time, so wait until it is fully cool before you empty the holder.
8. Air the Room
After burning incense, open the window again to let the smoke clear completely.
9. Make It a Ritual
Many people make incense a regular part of their week, for example on a Sunday evening or at the start of a new month. How often you burn it is up to you.
