How to Use Sandalwood Incense: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to use sandalwood incense: a step-by-step guide

Sandalwood has been burned for thousands of years, and it is still one of the most familiar incense scents in the world. People enjoy it during meditation and yoga, in religious ceremonies, in smoke cleansing rituals and on romantic evenings. To get the most from it, it helps to know how to light, use and put it out properly. Here is a step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Prepare your space

A little preparation makes the experience safer and more enjoyable:

  • Ventilation: Incense smoke can be intense in a closed room, so open a window or door to let fresh air move through. A gentle flow of air also helps the scent spread.
  • Choosing a holder: Use a holder made of a fireproof, heat-resistant material such as ceramic, metal or stone. It should hold the stick or cone securely and catch falling ash.
  • Setting an intention: Taking a moment before you light the incense can make the ritual more meaningful. Some people simply want a quiet moment, others are about to meditate, and others just want to enjoy a pleasant scent.

Step 2: Light the sandalwood incense

Sandalwood incense usually comes as sticks or cones. To light it:

  1. Light the tip: Hold the stick or cone at about a 45-degree angle and light the tip with a match or lighter.
  2. Keep the flame small: Sandalwood burns slowly, so a small flame is enough.
  3. Blow out the flame: After about 30 seconds to a minute, gently blow out the flame. The incense will keep smoldering without a flame.

Step 3: Let the scent spread and enjoy

Once the incense is smoldering, let the smoke drift through the room. You can wave your hand gently to help it move.

Enjoy the rich, warm, woody scent of sandalwood. It can accompany you while you meditate, practice yoga, work or unwind at the end of the day.

Tip: In some smoke cleansing traditions, people carry the smoke clockwise around the room and toward the corners. If you do this, hold the holder by its base and move slowly.

Step 4: Put out and store the incense

Sandalwood incense will burn until it goes out on its own. To end a session earlier, dip the ember in water or press it into sand. Make sure it is completely out, then store your remaining incense in a cool, dry place.

Traditional uses of sandalwood incense

  • Meditation and yoga: A traditional companion for meditation and yoga, setting a quiet, calm atmosphere.
  • Religious ceremonies: Sandalwood is considered sacred in several religions, including Hinduism and Buddhism, and is burned during prayer and ceremonies.
  • Evening rituals: In many homes, sandalwood is burned during quiet evenings and moments of rest.
  • Smoke cleansing rituals: In some traditions, sandalwood is burned to mark a space as fresh and welcoming.
  • Romantic evenings: In folklore, sandalwood is associated with romance, and many people choose it for a warm, intimate atmosphere.
