- Never leave a burning candle, incense or palo santo unattended. Keep it away from children, pets and anything that can catch fire.
- Burn on a heat-resistant holder or plate that catches ash and embers, in a room with some fresh air.
- Loose incense and resins burn on charcoal: set the charcoal on a layer of sand in a heat-resistant bowl and handle it with tongs. Charcoal and holders stay hot long after the smoke fades, so let them cool completely before touching or emptying.
- If you have asthma or are sensitive to smoke, use incense and palo santo with care, in a well-ventilated space.
- Candles: trim the wick to about 1/4 inch before each lighting. On the first burn, let a candle burn about one hour for every inch of its diameter, and never more than four hours at a time.
- Store incense, herbs and resins sealed, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight so the scent lasts.
- Stones: wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Each stone is unique in color and pattern.

Scent and character
Palo santo is bright and uplifting, with a lemon-pine scent; it burns slowly, so one piece lasts for several uses. Sandalwood is soft, woody and slightly spicy, the calm middle of the set. Agarwood is the richest of the three — warm, sweet and deep, a scent for reflective evenings.
In tradition
Palo santo, holy wood, has been used since the time of the Incas and is traditionally used in smoke cleansing rituals in Andean tradition. Sandalwood has long been a favorite in meditation traditions for its serene, contemplative mood. Agarwood, called the wood of the gods, is prized in many cultures for quiet, reflective moments. Many people rotate the three: palo santo in the morning, sandalwood for work, agarwood after dark.

How to use
- Place a piece of wood incense in a heat-resistant holder on a stable surface.
